Zinedine Zidane’s warning that Real Madrid were at their physical limit is now being seen. A depleted Los Blancos will face Getafe this weekend in LaLiga Santander, really risking their 14-game unbeaten run.
Zidane is having to manage eight absences in Sergio Ramos, Raphael Varane (COVID), Lucas Vazquez, Dani Carvajal, Eden Hazard and Ferland Mendy – all of whom are injured – while Nacho Fernandez and Casemiro will be suspended.
The squad named on Saturday has just 15 first-team players included, with Castilla’s Victor Chust making up the numbers. Of those, three are goalkeepers and Zidane has just 13 outfield players for the trip.
So, Zidane won’t have many chances to change things up either in his XI or during the match, which comes as bad news for Karim Benzema, Luka Modric and Toni Kroos. Mariano Diaz, though, might be handed a rare opportunity off the bench as Benzema’s replacement.
Marcelo could also be in line to start, having done so against Eibar as well. Isco could well feature in the XI too, in order to give some rest to Kroos, Modric or Fede Valverde.
At the back, it looks more likely than not that Alvaro Odriozola will feature at right-back in the absence of both Carvajal and Lucas. Eder Militao is the only fit centre-back available, so Victor Chust could accompany him at the heart of Real Madrid’s defence.
