Welcome to our live blog for the Champions League semi-final second leg between Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain at the Etihad Stadium. Goals from Kevin de Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez in the first leg, after Marquinhos had given PSG the lead, gives the English side the advantage, but a long 90 minutes, and possibly more, lie ahead.
Manchester City vs PSG LIVE – Champions League semi-finals latest updates
This is our live blog for Tuesday’s clash between Manchester City and PSG, which starts at 21:00 CEST. All our updates will come below, with the most recent entries at the top. Follow along with us to find out who will be the first team to reach the 2020/21 Champions League final.
20:55 CEST: City’s stars out to shine
City are looking to reach their first ever Champions League final. Much of their hopes are pinned on talisman De Bruyne, but his partners up front tonight, Mahrez and Foden, have also excelled of late. Will they pass the final hurdle?
20:30 CEST: British summer time
We may be just one month away from summer, but hail has welcomed PSG on their visit to England ahead of their Champions League semi final. PSG’s social media channels have shared an image of the Etihad turf after the hailstorm. One can’t imagine that Neymar will be too pleased with the weather.
20:05 CEST: Neymar is ready to give everything
With Mbappe only able to appear on the bench, even more pressure is on Neymar to deliver for his PSG side. Speaking before the encounter, Neymar left no doubts about his commitment to the cause.
“We have a very difficult game against Manchester City, but we have to believe, without thinking what the statistics say about our chances of winning,” Neymar said.
“Every Parisian has to believe in us and I’m the first. I’m on the frontline. I’m the first warrior in this battle.
“I’ll do my best and do everything possible to get through to the final, even if it means dying on the pitch.”
19:55 CEST: PSG’s confirmed starting XI
The big news is in, and it’s what all PSG fans would’ve feared: Mbappe is NOT in the starting XI. The Frenchman only makes the bench, having not fully recovered from injury. In his place comes Mauro Icardi. Elsewhere, Ander Herrera takes the place of the suspended Idrissa Gueye in midfield, while Diallo is preferred to Bakker at left-back.
PSG’s starting XI: Navas, Florenzi, Marquinhos, Kimpembe, Diallo; Herrera, Verratti, Paredes; Di Maria, Icardi and Neymar.
19:45 CEST: Manchester City’s confirmed starting XI
We did warn that predicting Pep would be impossible. Zinchenko is preferred at left back to Cancelo, while Fernandinho is selected ahead of Rodri at the heart of midfield. But it’s that wonderful front three of Mahrez, De Bruyne and Foden that will give PSG headaches tonight.
19:30 CEST: Big-game De Bruyne
Kevin de Bruyne is the man for the big occasion. Seven of De Bruyne’s 10 goals in the Champions League were scored in the knockout stages.
He has scored three against PSG, one last season at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu against Real Madrid and another in last year’s quarter-final against Lyon.
This season, De Bruyne netted in the 2-0 victory against Borussia Monchengladbach in the Round of 16 and scored another goal in Manchester City’s 2-1 win against Dortmund in the quarter-final.
19:00 CEST: Will Neymar end his drought?
Neymar rarely fails to turn up on the big stage, but the Brazilian, for all his contribution to the PSG side, is experiencing a mini-drought in the knockout stages of the Champions League. The former Santos star hasn’t netted in his last six European knockout stage games. His last strike in the decisive stage of the Champions League came in the round of 16 of last year’s edition, in a 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund.
Will Neymar end his drought against City?
18:20 CEST: PSG predicted line-up vs Manchester City
Mauricio Pochettino is sweating over the fitness of Kylian Mbappe, but one suspects that the Frenchman will push through and play in a match of such importance. Mbappe missed their weekend win over Lens, while Angel Di Maria was rested, but Neymar played almost the entirety of the game. Abdou Diallo played the entire 90 minutes against Lens, indicating that Mitchel Bakker will start at left back. Idrissa Gueye is suspended after seeing red for a harsh challenge on Ilkay Gundogan in the first leg.
PSG’s predicted XI: Keylor Navas, Alessandro Florenzi, Marquinhos, Presnel Kimpembe, Mitchel Bakker, Leandro Paredes, Marco Verratti, Danilo, Angel Di Maria, Neymar, Kylian Mbappe.
18:00 CEST: Manchester City predicted line-up vs PSG
As we all know, Pep Guardiola loves to tinker with his starting line-up, regardless of the magnitude of the occasion. The Catalan coach made several changes, however, to his recent Premier League match against Crystal Palace which could give some indication as to who will start. The likes of De Bruyne, Mahrez and Dias were all given the match off on the weekend.
Manchester City’s predicted XI: Ederson, Kyle Walker, John Stones, Ruben Dias, Joao Cancelo, Rodri, Gundogan, Riyad Mahrez, Bernardo Silva, Phil Foden, Kevin de Bruyne.
