The German press didn’t hold back in their criticism of the German national team after their extraordinary loss to North Macedonia.
The defeat saw Joachim Low‘s side lose top spot in World Cup Qualifying Group J, with Armenia now heading the table.
Wednesday night’s 2-1 reverse saw Die Mannschaft incur the particular wrath of German daily Bild.
“This was a defeat of deep embarrassment,” they wrote.
“Losing to North Macedonia – yes, North Macedonia – shows a pathetic picture of the team.
“Germany‘s play lacked punch, determination and intensity.
“And they’ve been beaten by a team ranked 65th in the world and with only four players playing in Europe’s top leagues.
“For them to beat the four-time world champions is quite ridiculous.”
Low wasn’t exempt from personal criticism.
“After that showing, him leaving the job after the European Championship seems the best option,” Bild continued.
“The question is: can he even get the team to put on a good showing there?”
Bild – who recognised the scoreline could’ve been worse due to an Emre Can handball that wasn’t given – also questioned the continuing absence from the squad of veterans Thomas Muller, Toni Kroos and Mats Hummels.
