Former England captain Michael Vaughan has been amongst the ones awestruck by Rishabh Pant’s consistency and audacity in recent times. After hitting a whirlwind 40-ball 77 in the second ODI against England in Pune, Rishabh Pant worked magic off his willow in the third ODI by making 78 from 62 balls to set the tourists a stiff total. Michael Vaughan has been stunned by the left-hander’s relaxed mindset while going out to bat.
Rishabh Pant’s consistency in Tests forced the selectors to recall the 23-year old for white-ball cricket too. The second and third ODI witnessed game-changing innings from Pant as he took England’s bowling attack to the cleaners. On Sunday, his knock of 78 included five fours and four sixes, enabling him to add 99 runs with Hardik Pandya as India left their opponents to chase 330 in the third ODI.
Michael Vaughan stated that Rishabh Pant is a freak and does things his way; however, he said that the left-hander’s method is unique that others should not try and emulate. The 46-year old pointed out that Pant looks quite relaxed while coming out to bat, suggesting that it’s only a game of cricket for him. Vaughan believes that it’s quite a refreshing attitude to have.
“I will be honest with you. I think he is just a freak. He just does things his way. I would not suggest many to try and play the way Rishabh Pant does, because he is so unique. One thing I would say to the youngsters watching Rishabh Pant is just his mindset. He looks so relaxed. When he goes out, and the pressure was on, he just looks like he is playing in the park. He is not playing for India, he is just playing cricket which he has played for many, many years. Be it U11s, U15s, U19s, and now the national team – it’s just a game of cricket for him. And that’s such a refreshing attitude and it’s very difficult to have that attitude,” Vaughan told Cricbuzz.
He just looks like he is having a bit of fun: Michael Vaughan
Michael Vaughan suggested that the youngsters should not try copying his technique; however, they could emulate his mindset. Vaughan reckons that the 23-year old backs himself entirely and is quite confident, while his unique technique makes him difficult to bowl to.
“I would tell youngsters that it is difficult to copy his technique, but you can certainly copy his mindset. He just looks like he is enjoying batting. He just looks like he is having a bit of fun. He backs himself, he is confident obviously. And with this unique technique, he is so difficult to bowl to,” he added.
